On Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised a security agreement signed with the US during a briefing with US President Joe Biden at the G7 summit in Italy.
This agreement, aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s defense against Russia, was accompanied by a $50 billion loan package for Ukraine.
Zelenskyy emphasized the urgent need for more air defense systems to protect against Russian attacks.
Biden assured that five countries, including Germany, have committed to providing air defense systems to Ukraine. He emphasized that all available resources would be directed to Ukraine until their needs are met.
Zelenskyy expressed concern about the ongoing support from the US and its allies, especially with upcoming elections.
The G7 leaders also agreed to keep Russian assets frozen until Moscow pays reparations for its invasion of Ukraine.
This move, along with new sanctions, aims to demonstrate to Russia that the international community remains united in its support for Ukraine.
The 10-year security agreement does not involve direct US military involvement but includes a commitment to sustainable funding and coordination with allies to ensure Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
The agreement can be terminated with six months’ notice, allowing future US administrations to withdraw if desired.
Additionally, the G7 summit addressed other global issues, including development assistance to Africa to counter Chinese influence.
Italy, holding the G7 presidency this year, hosted the summit in Puglia.
