Finidi George has stepped down as the coach of the Super Eagles. Toyin Ibitoye, a former media officer for the Super Eagles, announced this on X on Saturday.
Ibitoye’s post read: “News just in. Finidi George #FinidiGeorge_FG has resigned from his #NGSuperEagles manager position.”
George’s resignation comes after the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) decided to bring in a foreign coach to oversee him, despite his appointment in May.
George had taken over following the end of Jose Peseiro’s contract in February, after serving as his assistant for 20 months.
However, the team’s poor performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin led to his demotion.
As a result, George’s one-year contract would be downgraded, with his monthly salary cut from N15 million to N5 million.
Additionally, his assistants would be replaced by the new foreign coach’s staff.
Earlier, in a meeting with Sports Minister John Enoh, George expressed his frustration, citing a lack of support from the NFF and questioning the commitment of Nigeria’s top players during the critical World Cup qualifiers.
