France, in collaboration with the African Union (AU) and GAVI (the Vaccine Alliance), plans to raise more than $1 billion to enhance vaccine production in Africa.
The Global Forum for Vaccine Sovereignty and Innovation in Paris, held today, discussed this ambitious objective.
The event was attended by African heads of state, health ministers, the Director-General of the WHO, and leaders from pharmaceutical companies.
During the forum, the African Vaccine Manufacturing Accelerator (AVMA) was launched to assist Africa in achieving vaccine self-sufficiency, aiming for 60% production capacity by 2040.
This initiative, announced during WHO’s World Immunisation Week in April, addresses access gaps highlighted by the Covid pandemic.
