Cuba has decided to support South Africa’s case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.
According to Radio Havana Cuba, Cuba intends to present its interpretation of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide as a third state, asserting that Israel has violated this convention in Gaza.
The case aims to stop the ongoing violence against Palestinians, citing Israel’s disproportionate and indiscriminate use of force in the Gaza Strip, which it occupies illegally.
Cuba emphasized that Israel, with support from the United States, has consistently disregarded its responsibilities as an occupying power under the Geneva Convention.
Cuba condemned practices such as genocide, apartheid, forced displacement, and collective punishments, stating that they have no place in today’s world and should not be tolerated by the international community.
Cuba called for justice and urged adherence to the UN Charter and international law.
The International Court of Justice has accused Israel of genocide, with a recent ruling demanding Israel immediately cease operations in Rafah, where over a million Palestinians sought refuge during the conflict in May. Despite a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire, Israel has faced widespread international condemnation for its ongoing military actions in Gaza since October 7. Local health authorities report significant casualties among Palestinians, with many fatalities and injuries, as well as widespread destruction and severe shortages of essential supplies in Gaza due to the prolonged conflict.
