Volkswagen has recalled 271,330 Atlas SUVs due to faulty passenger-side airbags.
According to the US National Highway and Safety Administration, Atlas vehicles made between 2021 and 2024, and Atlas Cross Sport vehicles made between 2020 and 2024, may have a wiring error preventing the front passenger airbags from deploying.
In March, Volkswagen announced a recall of 143,000 Atlas SUVs for a similar issue, but it’s unclear if this new recall includes those vehicles. Volkswagen did not respond to requests for clarification.
In a statement to CNN, Volkswagen explained that the seat heaters can interfere with the car’s weight sensors, causing the passenger airbag to switch off even if the seat is occupied. When this occurs, a warning light and sound notify the driver.
Affected vehicle owners will be notified by mail on August 16, and Volkswagen dealers will replace the faulty parts free of charge once they are available.
