Two Algerian journalists, Sofiane Ghirous and Ferhat Omar from the news outlet “Algerie Scoop,” were arrested by Algerian authorities.
They were detained for publishing a video showing businesswomen protesting their treatment at a government-sponsored event.
Ghirous, who serves as the editor-in-chief, and Omar, the website’s director, were accused of disseminating content that authorities deemed to be incitement and hate speech.
The video featured women startup founders criticizing the Algerian government for allegedly humiliating and treating them with contempt during an innovation event organized by the Ministry of Education and Professional Training.
Algeria’s recent ranking of 139 out of 180 in the Freedom of Expression index by Reporters Without Borders highlights ongoing concerns over restrictions on journalists and independent media in the country.
