Brazilian football legend Pele, known for his unmatched career, will be honored in his homeland with a special day named “King Pele Day.”
Edson Arantes do Nascimento, famously Pele, is celebrated as one of the greatest players in football history, having secured three World Cup victories with Brazil and achieving over 1,000 goals during his remarkable tenure.
The designated day, November 19th, commemorates the momentous occasion when Pele scored his 1,000th goal while playing for his childhood club Santos at Rio de Janeiro’s iconic Maracana Stadium in 1969.
This historic feat, a penalty kick in a 2-1 victory over Vasco da Gama, prompted jubilant fans to flood the pitch in celebration of “O Rei’s” (The King’s) accomplishment.
Pele, hailing from Tres Coracoes, dedicated this milestone to Brazil’s underprivileged children.
In 1970, he clinched his third World Cup title with Brazil, solidifying his legendary status.
Following his passing on December 29, 2022, at the age of 82, Pele’s death sparked a wave of mourning nationwide and international tributes to the iconic athlete.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva enacted legislation to establish this significant memorial date.
