Prof Jibril Diso, Nigeria’s pioneering visually impaired academic, has passed away, as announced by Lamara Garba, a spokesperson from Bayero University Kano (BUK) on Friday. Diso served as a lecturer in BUK’s special education department until his demise.
Born in the Diso area of Gwale LGA in Kano, Diso began his schooling in 1962, completing primary education in 1969. He attended the Gindiri Blind Secondary School in Plateau state in 1979, followed by studies at Kano’s Tudun Maliki School for the Special Needs. Joining BUK’s special education department in 1994, he achieved the milestone of becoming Nigeria’s first visually impaired professor in 2019 after obtaining his PhD in special education from the University of Birmingham in London in 1991.
