Meta has ended restrictions on former US President Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts, which were imposed after his supporters stormed Capitol Hill following the 2020 elections.
“Former President Trump, as the Republican Party’s nominee, will no longer face heightened suspension penalties,” Meta announced on Friday.
His accounts were reinstated in February 2023, with a warning about potential penalties for future violations. However, Meta lifted this additional restriction last Friday.
Meta stated ahead of the upcoming presidential elections in November, “In fulfilling our responsibility to enable political expression, we believe that the American people should hear from presidential nominees under the same conditions.”
The company clarified that US presidential candidates must adhere to the same Community Standards as all Facebook and Instagram users, which include policies against hate speech and incitement to violence.
Trump, who is also banned from Twitter and YouTube, typically communicates through his social media platform, Truth Social.
