Former President Donald Trump was heard instructing Secret Service agents to “let me get my shoes” repeatedly as they protected him on the ground immediately after an attempt on his life at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday.
In an interview with the New York Post’s Michael Goodwin, Trump clarified his comment, explaining that the agents had tackled him so forcefully that his tightly fitting shoes had fallen off.
During the interview, conducted on Trump’s private plane en route to Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention, Trump was observed wearing a large white bandage covering his right ear. Goodwin reported that no photographs were permitted of Trump with the bandage visible.
Reflecting on the incident, Trump remarked that many people had commented that a photo of him defiantly pumping his fist amidst the chaos was iconic. He humorously noted, “They’re right and I didn’t die. Usually you have to die to have an iconic picture.”
