The Republican National Convention first night focused on the economy, but Donald Trump’s first public appearance since an attempted assassination at his rally on Saturday took center stage.
When Trump entered Fiserv Forum with a white bandage over his right ear, the atmosphere electrified. The crowd erupted with cheers as Lee Greenwood performed “God Bless the U.S.A.,” evoking strong emotions, including from Trump’s son, Don Jr.
Trump only mouthed “thank you” before taking a seat next to Senator JD Vance, his newly announced running mate, and Representative Byron Donalds. Rally attendees chanted “Fight! Fight! Fight!” echoing Trump’s defiant words after the shooting incident.
While most speakers adhered to the “Make America Wealthy Again” theme, references to the shooting and contrasting rhetoric occasionally emerged. High inflation and critiques of President Joe Biden’s economic policies were dominant topics throughout the evening.
North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson highlighted rising costs, sharing his personal struggles. Known for his combative speeches, Robinson’s subdued tone was notable.
Despite inflation cooling and low unemployment rates, the economy remained a key campaign issue. The shooting incident at Trump’s Pennsylvania rally, where a gunman injured Trump and others, shifted his speech to emphasize unity.
The assassination attempt’s impact was felt but not the main theme. Select speakers addressed it, including Sen. Tim Scott, who praised Trump’s resilience, and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who called it a somber moment for the nation.
The convention also featured attacks on Democrats and other groups. Greene criticized transgender rights, and Sen. Ron Johnson condemned the “Democratic agenda.” Johnson later clarified his intended speech was altered.
Investor David Sacks criticized Democrats and blamed them for issues in San Francisco. Charlie Kirk urged Republicans to oust the Biden-Harris administration.
