Kenyan President William Ruto has sharply criticized the US-based Ford Foundation, accusing it of supporting “anarchy” and backing anti-government protests that turned violent last month.
The country is experiencing political turmoil as Gen-Z Kenyans’ protests against proposed tax hikes have expanded into a broader movement opposing Ruto and his administration.
The protests, which began a month ago, have resulted in dozens of deaths, with June 25 being the deadliest day.
On that day, protesters stormed parliament, prompting authorities to fire live bullets at the crowds.
Speaking in Nakuru on Monday, Ruto condemned those allegedly funding the unrest in Kenya, accusing them of sponsoring violence against the nation’s democracy.
He challenged the Ford Foundation, questioning how it benefits from funding violence and threatening to call them out if they do not cease their support for the chaos.
The Ford Foundation, which advocates for social justice and democratic values, has yet to respond to Ruto’s accusations.
