The Colombian Football Federation issued an apology after its president, Ramón Jesurún, was arrested Sunday night at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium during the Copa America final. Jesurún, 71, and his son, Ramón Jamil Jesurún, 43, were charged with battery following an altercation with two security guards and a woman who intervened.
The federation explained that the incident occurred after members of their delegation were denied access to the field despite having proper credentials.
One security guard allegedly made a threatening gesture, leading Jesurún to protest his son’s treatment.
The federation expressed regret and apologized to the event organizers, the host country, and those affected, noting that President Jesurún deeply regrets the incident, which was a protective response for his family.
Jesurún’s son told reporters that the security guards initiated the altercation and described the situation as “ridiculous.” Jesurún himself waved his credentials, claiming they granted “total access” and criticized the guard for not recognizing them.
Viral videos showed fans clashing with security at the stadium gates before the game, with some scaling barriers and being subdued by officers. Over 65,000 people attended the match, where Argentina defeated Colombia 1-0 to win the championship.
Hard Rock Stadium, with a history of hosting major events, stated it would review security protocols in collaboration with CONMEBOL, CONCACAF, and local law enforcement.
Miami-Dade Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez highlighted the need for improved security planning ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will see Miami hosting seven games.
He pledged to be involved in discussions to ensure better preparation.
Mayor Daniella Levine Cava announced a full review of the events at the Copa America final.
