The International Testing Agency announced on Saturday that Nigerian lightweight boxer Cynthia Ogunsemilore has been temporarily suspended after testing positive for a prohibited substance.
This suspension was issued ahead of her debut match at the Paris Olympics.
Ogunsemilore tested positive for furosemide, a diuretic listed on WADA’s restricted substances list, during an out-of-competition test conducted on Thursday.
According to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Ogunsemilore has been notified of the situation and faces provisional suspension until the issue is resolved in accordance with the World Anti-Doping Code and IOC Anti-Doping Rules.
This means she cannot compete, train, coach, or engage in any Olympic activities at Paris 2024.
She has the right to challenge the provisional suspension by appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) – Anti-Doping Division and can also request an analysis of her B-sample.
The Commonwealth Games bronze medalist and African Games champion was set to compete against Taiwan’s Wu Shih Yi in a round-of-16 match on Tuesday.
