In response to economic difficulties and widespread hunger, the Nigerian Government has announced a temporary suspension of import duties and taxes on essential food items through the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS). This measure aims to make basic necessities more affordable and alleviate the hunger crisis.
Comptroller-General of the NCS, Bashir Adeniyi, shared this update in a public address on Monday, underscoring the government’s dedication to easing the financial strain on its citizens.
Adeniyi highlighted the impact of global inflation on Nigerian households and emphasized the need for this intervention to reduce costs and combat hunger. “We are committed to implementing this measure effectively to tackle the hunger problem in our nation,” he stated.
Additionally, Adeniyi noted that the NCS is working to simplify export procedures to facilitate Nigerian goods entering international markets. This includes improvements such as advanced ruling systems, authorized economic operators, and time-release studies to enhance trade and create economic opportunities.
Adeniyi also emphasized the NCS’s efforts to prevent the smuggling of arms and dangerous weapons across Nigeria’s borders and called for national unity and cooperation to address current challenges and bolster border security.
