Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector General of Police, has extended an invitation to Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, a human rights lawyer, for a meeting in Abuja. This comes after Adegboruwa requested police protection for demonstrators.
In a response dated July 29, 2024, the IGP directed senior police officials to address Adegboruwa’s request.
The letter, signed by Commissioner of Police Johnson Adenola, also stated that the IGP seeks to meet with Adegboruwa on July 30, 2024, at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja to discuss the matter further.
Adenola’s letter emphasized that the Deputy Inspectors-General of Police, the Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, and the Commissioners of Police across the country have been instructed to attend to the request.
Meanwhile, there are warnings from the police, military, and the Department of State Services about protests similar to those seen in Kenya.
Some politicians and others have urged the youth to cancel their planned rallies, which are set to take place in August across all states and in the capital, Abuja.
These protests are in response to severe economic hardship, including soaring prices and high inflation rates exacerbated by recent government policies on fuel subsidies and foreign exchange.
