In Jos, Plateau State, streets from Ahmadu Bello Way to Hillcrest Junction are deserted due to a planned hunger protest by Nigerian youth.
The protest appears low-key, with only a few Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) gathered in front of HB Bank on Ahmadu Bello Way, playing music by activist Fela Anikulapo Kuti and holding a world press conference.
The CSOs present, including Project Sprint, CYPA Africa, and LNK247, form a coalition against bad governance and injustice in Nigeria. A nearby observer, Pa Andrew Gyanpa, believes the youth are wasting their time, claiming they were paid to disrupt the state’s peace.
He mentioned that the protest should have been a widespread public outcry involving people of all ages, but government actions have hindered its impact.
Gyanpa urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government to take today’s events seriously, warning that Nigerians are not joking this time.
He emphasized that the protest should have been a collective effort by all Nigerians rather than a few hired individuals, pointing out the empty streets and lack of public participation.
Gyanpa concluded by expressing hope that the government will listen to this small display of grievances.
