On Thursday, Nigerian police deployed tear gas to break up a protest by several hundred #EndBadGovernance demonstrators in Kano, the country’s second-largest city.
The protesters were rallying against high living costs and tried to start bonfires outside the state governor’s office.
The police’s use of tear gas caused most of the protesters to fall back.
The #EndBadGovernance movement gained momentum through social media, but authorities had warned against replicating recent violent protests in Kenya, which led to the government scrapping new taxes.
