Police in Kano have initiated a thorough door-to-door operation to recover items stolen during the #EndBadGovernance protest on Thursday.
The demonstration, which started peacefully, was overtaken by suspected criminals who looted shops, homes, and government offices, including an unopened Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) office. They also vandalized street lights and other public property.
In response, the police arrested over 400 suspects and retrieved some of the stolen items. Sa’adatu Baba Ahmad reported that police were actively recovering stolen goods from residences in Yakasai and Durumin Zungura areas.
The Kano Police Command reaffirmed their commitment to holding those responsible accountable.
The protest, part of a larger nationwide movement against economic hardships, descended into chaos as looters took over. Police spokesperson Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa confirmed that 269 arrests were made on Thursday, with the suspects displayed publicly.
Following the unrest, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf imposed a 24-hour curfew to restore order and ensure safety.
However, the curfew was briefly lifted for five hours on Friday.
