More than half a billion dollars in projects at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport are either beginning or nearing early completion.
A $263 million expansion of Terminal 2 has started, while the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) and Delta Air Lines aim to expedite the final phase of a $242 million, multiyear improvement at Terminal 1.
The MAC has initiated the construction of a 168,000-square-foot expansion at Terminal 2, adding two gates, more seating, restrooms, concessions, and support areas.
Terminal 2, which serves Sun Country Airlines and six other carriers, is experiencing record passenger numbers, with March being the busiest month ever.
Brian Ryks, CEO of the MAC, highlighted the surge in travel demand and described the expansion as a strategic investment.
The project, which received a $20 million federal grant, aims for LEED Gold certification and will include energy-saving systems.
At Terminal 1, the MAC and Delta are seeking to advance the third phase of a $242 million modernization program.
The project, the largest interior renovation in the airport’s history, involves upgrades such as new gate seating, LED lighting, and improved concourse areas.
If approved, the third phase will start later this year instead of early 2025.
Delta and the MAC are sharing the costs, with Delta leading the construction efforts.
