Several nations have urged their citizens to leave Lebanon immediately due to growing concerns that the Middle East conflict could escalate following Israel’s assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on Wednesday.
The United Kingdom, United States, Sweden, France, Canada, and Jordan have advised their citizens to take the next available flight.
Iran has promised retaliation against Israel for the assassination, and many believe that Lebanon-based Hezbollah, which is supported by Tehran, will play a significant role in any retaliatory actions, likely prompting a strong response from Israel.
Haniyeh’s assassination followed the killing of Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr by Israel in Beirut hours earlier.
On Sunday, Hezbollah launched dozens of rockets at northern Israel, but Israel’s Iron Dome defense system intercepted them, with no reported casualties. In response, Israel’s air force struck targets in southern Lebanon.
Reports indicate that several airlines have suspended or canceled flights, and many flights have sold out.
The US Military announced it is sending additional warships and fighter jets to the region to help defend Israel against potential attacks from Iran and its allies. Two British military ships are already present, and the Royal Air Force has transport helicopters on standby.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned Israelis of “challenging days ahead” and stated that Israel is prepared for any scenario amidst threats from various sides.
