Amid ongoing protests in Nigeria over economic difficulties and poor governance, some young people have started attacking properties owned by political figures.
On Tuesday, videos shared on X showed youths setting fire to a mansion belonging to Nazifi Sani Gumel, a House of Representatives member from the Gumel/Maigatari/Sule Tankarkar/Gagarawa Federal Constituency. The protesters accused him of neglecting his constituency since his election 14 months ago.
In Yobe State, another group of angry youths targeted the home of a sitting Senator, accusing him of embezzling public funds intended for district development.
The administration of President Bola Tinubu reported that around 150 new computers and laptops were found in the looted office of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Industrial Park in Kano.
However, another group of protesters, wearing green “peace” caps, intervened and drove away the vandals.
Minister of Digital Economy Bosun Tijani, speaking on Channels TV, confirmed that the facility had been extensively damaged. He noted that between 120 and 150 computers were among the stolen items, along with a generator and other necessary equipment.
He mentioned that the damage was part of the chaos associated with the protests and that additional security might be needed for the facility’s upcoming official launch.
