Several U.S. personnel were injured in what is suspected to be a rocket attack at the Ain al-Asad air base in western Iraq, according to U.S. defense officials.
According to reports, at least two Katyusha rockets were fired at the base.
An official confirmed the injuries and mentioned that base personnel are assessing the damage. The exact number of injuries has not been disclosed, but the rockets reportedly landed inside the base.
This incident occurs amidst rising tensions in the Middle East, particularly following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, which has led Iran to threaten retaliation against Israel. Although the Israel Defense Forces have not claimed responsibility for Haniyeh’s death, Iran has promised a response.
In response to the situation, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani to discuss regional tensions and the importance of de-escalation. Blinken emphasized the U.S. commitment to protecting forces and advancing stability in the region.
