On Sunday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that the bronze medal for the floor exercise at the Paris Games, initially awarded to American gymnast Jordan Chiles, will be reassigned to Romanian gymnast Ana Bărbosu.
This decision follows a Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruling which determined that the USA’s challenge to Chiles’ score was submitted after the one-minute deadline.
The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) has decided to reinstate Chiles’ original score of 13.666, and Bărbosu’s score of 13.700 will now place her in third. Consequently, the IOC confirmed that Bărbosu will receive the bronze medal instead of Chiles.
The IOC is coordinating with Romania’s National Olympic Committee for the medal presentation and is in contact with the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) about the return of Chiles’ medal.
USA Gymnastics expressed its disappointment with the CAS decision.
The competition concluded with Bărbosu initially believing she had secured the bronze after her score of 13.700. Chiles, whose initial score was 13.666, had her score increased after a successful challenge by her coaches. This change allowed her to claim third place behind gold medalist Rebeca Andrade and American Simone Biles.
Chiles shared on Instagram that she is stepping away from social media for her mental health, expressing her distress over the ruling with four broken heart emojis.
