Khalid bin Mohsen Shaari, once the world’s heaviest man, has achieved an incredible weight loss of 1,195 pounds (542 kg), thanks to the intervention of Saudi Arabia’s former King Abdullah. Initially weighing 1,345 pounds (610 kg), Shaari now weighs just 139 pounds (63 kg).
Shaari was bedridden for over three years due to his extreme weight, relying heavily on his family for basic needs. His life changed in 2013 when King Abdullah noticed his situation and promised comprehensive medical care.
King Abdullah’s involvement led to the development of a detailed medical plan, carried out by a team of 30 healthcare professionals.
Shaari was moved from Jazan to King Fahad Medical City in Riyadh using specialized equipment, highlighting the seriousness of his condition.
Shaari’s treatment focused on gastric bypass surgery, a customized diet, and a strict exercise program. In the first six months, he underwent extensive physiotherapy and intensive care, leading to a significant reduction in his body weight.
By 2023, Shaari’s weight had dropped to 139 pounds (63.5 kg). The rapid weight loss left him with excess skin, requiring several surgeries to remove it. These procedures are typical for individuals who lose large amounts of weight, helping their skin conform to their new body size.
Shaari’s extraordinary transformation earned him the nickname “The Smiling Man” from the medical staff who supported him. His journey is not just about losing weight but also highlights the power of medical care and human determination.
Shaari’s story, from being bedridden to reclaiming his life, is a powerful testament to hope, perseverance, and the impact of compassionate healthcare.
