On Monday, President Biden will deliver a keynote address at the opening night of the Democratic National Convention, which was initially meant to energize his final push for a second term. Instead, it will serve as an opportunity to hand over the reins to Vice President Kamala Harris.
Biden’s appearance at the convention will be brief, with his speech, the last of the night, starting just before 11 p.m. on ABC Eastern time.
Shortly after midnight, he and First Lady Jill Biden will depart for California, where they will begin a two-week vacation, stepping out of the spotlight as Harris officially takes over as the new face of the Democratic Party.
However, there are concerns about potential disruptions from a small group of uncommitted delegates who might use the occasion to express their dissatisfaction with Biden’s stance on the situation in Gaza.
This week’s convention, now centered around Harris, will showcase the campaign machinery Biden built over the past year, much of which has been handed over to the vice president following his exit from the race and endorsement of her candidacy.
