Oprah Winfrey made an unexpected appearance at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday, sharply criticizing former President Trump and his vice presidential candidate. This comes 24 years after she previously suggested Trump could be a good president.
Speaking to the audience at the United Center, Winfrey dismissed “old tricks and tropes” meant to distract from crucial issues, emphasizing the need for serious discussions during these complex times. She highlighted the importance of civilized debate for a functioning democracy.
Winfrey also criticized Trump’s claim that a single trip to the polls would be enough, asserting her commitment as a registered independent to vote repeatedly because it is a core American value.
She further condemned Trump’s running mate, Sen. JD Vance, for derogatory remarks about “childless cat ladies,” stressing that in emergencies, the focus should be on helping everyone regardless of their background.
In response to Winfrey’s remarks, the Trump campaign released a letter from 2000 where she had previously endorsed Trump. Reflecting on her past view, Winfrey admitted she had considered him a potential leader at the time, but emphasized in her Chicago speech that values, character, and common sense are crucial in leadership and should be prioritized over personal loyalty.
