The Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE), under Simon Ekpa’s leadership, has announced a planned month-long lockdown targeting Nigerian government offices in the South-East.

This action, set to take place from August 28 to September 26, 2024, is a response to ongoing security issues and the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Ekpa revealed this decision on Friday via his official X account, explaining that it was made during a virtual BRGIE cabinet meeting.

The lockdown will impact government offices in Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, and Anambra states. Key demands include Kanu’s immediate release, the release of other detained Biafrans, and the demilitarization of the South-East region.

Ekpa criticized the Nigerian government for alleged violence against Christians and Biafrans, including attacks on churches and abductions of worshippers. He called for the full withdrawal of Nigerian security forces from Biafra territory and the release of all detained Biafrans, including those in the north.

This announcement follows IPOB’s earlier decision to cancel its Monday sit-at-home order, which the BRGIE has continued to enforce in the South-East. The impending lockdown is expected to have significant implications for regional stability.
