On Friday night, the Benue State Police Command announced that 20 medical students from the University of Jos and the University of Maiduguri, who were kidnapped by unknown gunmen last Thursday, have been freed.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed that the students are unharmed.
The release comes just five days after Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun dispatched a tactical unit to Benue State and reassigned the State Commissioner of Police, CP Yabanet, to Otukpo LGA to assist in rescuing the students.
The rescue operation, coordinated by the Office of the National Security Adviser, involved a joint effort from local residents, police, DSS, and military personnel.
The students were taken from Otukpo in the South Senatorial District of Benue State. The Police Public Relations Officer confirmed their release via text, stating, “Kidnap victims released. Details will be released tomorrow morning please.”
This successful operation is a significant relief for the families and friends of the students.
