A new diphtheria outbreak in Kano State has resulted in over 40 deaths, primarily affecting children.
Many others are in hospitals, with the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) overwhelmed.
During a visit on August 28, 2024, all three wards at the IDH were filled, and numerous patients were waiting to be seen.
An unnamed hospital official noted a high daily death rate and a constant influx of patients, with local hospitals lacking the resources to handle such cases. Most patients are sent to the IDH because it is better equipped for infectious diseases.
Samira Danzaki, whose daughter is being treated at the hospital, shared that her daughter, who had severe fever and neck swelling, has been responding to treatment after being referred to the IDH.
Another patient reported worsening throat issues after initially having a cold.
The State Hospital Management Board’s Public Relations Officer, Samira Sulaiman, has not confirmed or denied the details but mentioned that an emergency meeting is being held to address the situation.
