The Canadian government has introduced a new policy that prohibits Nigerians and other holders of Canadian Visitor Visas from applying for work permits while in Canada.
This change, announced by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) on Wednesday, will take effect immediately.
Originally, the policy allowing visitors to apply for work permits without leaving Canada was set to expire on February 28, 2025.
However, IRCC is ending it early to manage the number of temporary residents and maintain the integrity of the immigration system.
The policy was initially introduced in August 2020 to help visitors who were stranded in Canada due to COVID-19 border closures. However, the IRCC has noted that some individuals exploited this policy to work in Canada unlawfully.
This new restriction is part of a broader effort by the Canadian government to tighten immigration controls.
The recent immigration reforms have led to protests, especially among international students. Thousands of students demonstrated against new policies that could result in the deportation of around 70,000 of them.
As of 2023, international students represent 37% of study visa holders in Canada.
The new restrictions on student visas are expected to cut the number of foreign students by 35%, a move the government says is necessary to ease pressure on housing, unemployment, and public services.
Additionally, just two days ago, the Canadian government announced stricter regulations, including the prohibition of applying for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) at the border.
