Wike, the former Governor of Rivers State, has been a long-time member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but now stands as the sole opposition member in the federal cabinet led by the All Progressives Congress (APC).
His appointment by President Tinubu is believed to be linked to his choice to support a candidate outside his party, Atiku Abubakar, in the 2023 presidential election, following disagreements over Abubakar’s running mate.
Calls have emerged from within the PDP for sanctions against Wike due to his collaboration with the ruling APC and his acceptance of a ministerial position under Tinubu. Despite this, Wike has expressed indifference to his critics and has affirmed his commitment to the current administration’s success.
At a PDP Congress in Port Harcourt on August 31, 2024, Wike expressed satisfaction with his role in Tinubu’s government, stating, “We are fully in government, fully in Tinubu’s government. I have no regrets and will continue to serve. Anyone upset should go and hug the transformer .”
Wike also criticized his successor and former ally, Governor Siminalyi Fubara, and other PDP governors. He warned of potential conflict if they attempt to take control of the party’s structure in Rivers State, asserting that anyone who challenges this will face significant backlash.
He emphasized his resolve to protect the party’s interests in Rivers and dismissed concerns about criticisms, asserting that the party will endure and confront any opposition head-on.
