Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has stated that Nigeria is not inherently difficult to manage, attributing the country’s challenges to poor leadership.
He emphasized that while Nigeria is complex and requires thorough understanding, effective management is achievable with honesty and commitment.
Obasanjo made these remarks during a memorial lecture in Lagos honoring the late Akintola Williams, organized by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).
Reflecting on his presidency, Obasanjo asserted that he did his utmost to advance the country, highlighting his efforts to manage Nigeria’s finances. He recalled inheriting a situation with N3.7 billion in reserves while facing significant debt repayments, which led him to seek debt relief. His efforts resulted in a substantial reduction in debt and an increase in reserves. He praised Akintola Williams as a wise leader deserving of posthumous recognition for his contributions to the nation.
