Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, a prominent international figure, resigned on Wednesday in anticipation of a major government shake-up. Kuleba, aged 43, did not specify his reasons for resigning.
This comes after Russian strikes killed seven people in a western Ukrainian city, following one of the deadliest missile attacks since the war began.
Additionally, four other Cabinet ministers resigned on Tuesday, indicating this reshuffle could be the most significant since Russia’s invasion in February 2022.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had hinted last week that the reshuffle was imminent as the war nears its 1,000th day in November. He emphasized that Ukraine needs “new energy,” including in its diplomatic efforts.
During a Kyiv press conference with Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris, Zelenskyy mentioned he could not announce replacements yet due to uncertainty over their acceptance.
Zelenskyy aims to maintain national morale as Ukraine faces ongoing conflict with Russia and prepares for another challenging winter.
Russia’s attacks have severely damaged Ukraine’s power grid, affecting around 70% of its energy production and disrupting heat and water supplies.
