The House Education and Workforce Committee issued a subpoena to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz on Wednesday, seeking records connected to a $250 million COVID-19 relief fraud that occurred during his tenure.
Walz, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, was instructed to provide documents related to the scandal, which involved federal child nutrition program funds being misused by the Minnesota Department of Education.
Instead of being used to feed children, the funds were diverted to support extravagant lifestyles, including luxury cars and overseas real estate, by members of the fraudulent nonprofit Feeding Our Future, based in Minneapolis. State agencies were responsible for managing the funds and submitting claims for reimbursement to the USDA.
Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) explained in a letter accompanying the subpoena that the committee needs to obtain documents to reveal the actions of Walz and his administration in relation to the department’s management of the nutrition program and to determine their role in the fraud involving taxpayer dollars meant to feed children.
