A 47-year-old woman, Patricia Sierra, was arrested for stealing a casket with a body inside from a Las Vegas funeral home.
She claimed to have no recollection of the incident because she “blacked out from drinking six beers,” according to her arrest report.
Sierra faces charges including burglary, grand larceny, and disturbing human remains following the August 27 theft, which was captured on surveillance cameras, as reported.
At around 3 a.m., police were called to the Affordable Cremation & Burial Service after someone reported a body lying face down outside, with the casket left on the sidewalk. Officers found the body on rocks with its feet covered in plastic bags.
The deceased had been at the funeral home since August 20, with a viewing held on August 26, just before the theft occurred.
Surveillance footage revealed Sierra breaking a front window to gain access, then dragging the casket outside in multiple trips. She later expressed remorse and attributed the incident to her substance abuse problems.
Sierra was arrested two days later after being recognized at a convenience store.
Her bail was set at $11,000, and she remains in custody.
Investigation is ongoing.
