Over seven bishops led a group of protesters to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) office in Asaba, the capital of Delta State, urging the agency to stop targeting Senior Prophet Jeremiah Fufeyin of Christ MercyLand Deliverance Ministry, Abuja, over his spiritual products.
The protesters, including members of Fufeyin’s church and other Christian denominations, gathered outside the NAFDAC office on Tuesday, braving heavy rain and holding placards with messages such as “Spiritual products have spiritual backing, don’t need NAFDAC approval” and “When it comes to spiritual matters, respect them.”
Speaking on behalf of the group, Samuel Baaba, Metropolitan Archbishop of the Charismatic Anglican Church of Nigeria, warned NAFDAC to stay out of spiritual issues. He stated, “NAFDAC has no right to regulate spiritual products. There are limits, especially when it comes to matters of faith.”
Calixtus, Rector of the Union of Theological Institute and Seminary in Port Harcourt, and Most Celestine Ewurum, Evangelical Church leader, echoed this sentiment, pointing out that the NAFDAC Act of 2004 does not give the agency authority to regulate spiritual products.
They argued that NAFDAC had no basis to label Fufeyin’s products as fake without testing them, and called for clarity on what was allegedly wrong with the product in question.
