The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a recall for Dove Beauty Cream Bar Soap (100g), batch number 81832M 08, made in Germany, due to a chemical impurity.
The product contains Butylphenyl Methylpropional (BMHCA), also known as Lilial, which is prohibited in cosmetics because it poses significant health risks, including potential reproductive harm and skin sensitization.
NAFDAC’s statement highlighted that BMHCA has been banned by several EU regulatory authorities for these reasons. The agency also noted that similar Dove products have been recalled or banned in other countries for containing this chemical.
NAFDAC warned that the recalled soaps are not listed in its database and emphasized that soap imports are restricted in Nigeria.
Importers, distributors, and consumers are advised to avoid handling these products and to report any they have to the nearest NAFDAC office.
The agency also encouraged healthcare professionals and consumers to report any adverse effects from using regulated products to NAFDAC through various channels.
