Suellen Carey, a Brazilian model and influencer who had previously married herself due to difficulties finding a suitable partner, has now sought a divorce from herself after just one year.
Carey’s sologamy, or self-marriage, was initially received with mixed reactions. While some admired her bold act of self-love and independence, others were skeptical.
Despite her efforts, including attending couples therapy alone, Carey found herself dissatisfied and lonely in her self-marriage.
In a recent interview, Carey explained that her high expectations of herself were not met, leading to exhaustion and loneliness. She realized that she needed a real partner and concluded that ending her self-marriage was necessary for her well-being.
Carey, who attended ten therapy sessions to address the issues in her sologamy, views the experience as a valuable lesson in recognizing when to end a cycle that isn’t working. She now feels ready to seek new love.
Carey’s decision follows similar instances, such as Cris Galera, who married herself in 2021 but divorced 90 days later, and Kshama Bindu, who became the first Indian woman to marry herself in 2022, inspired by a Netflix show.
