Fact-checking Donald Trump’s statements from the presidential debate extended beyond the moderators.
On Wednesday, the German Foreign Office took to X (formerly Twitter) to address and mock a comment Trump made about Germany’s energy policies.
Trump had criticized Vice President Harris’s clean energy policies, including reductions in fracking and fossil fuel emissions, using Germany as an example. He claimed that Germany abandoned its green energy approach and returned to traditional energy sources within a year.
In response, Germany clarified that its energy system is operating with over 50% renewable energy. They are shutting down coal and nuclear plants, with plans to eliminate coal by 2038. They also dismissed Trump’s false claims about Haitian immigrants, adding, “PS: We also don’t eat cats and dogs.”
Germany, which is committed to transitioning to a low-carbon economy by 2045, has faced challenges, such as shutting down its remaining nuclear power plants and experiencing energy shortages at the start of the Ukraine–Russia war. Despite these issues, Germany has not built new coal plants and continues to phase them out.
Trump’s allies, including former U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell, accused Germany of interfering in the U.S. presidential debate with their fact-checking response.
