On Friday, Pope Francis criticized former U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to deport millions of immigrants and Vice President Kamala Harris’s support for abortion rights.
Speaking to reporters on his flight back to Rome from Singapore, the pope described rejecting migrants as a “grave” sin and compared abortion to “assassination.”
Francis suggested that U.S. Catholics face a choice between “the lesser evil” in the upcoming election, though he did not name Trump or Harris directly. He emphasized the importance of voting, stating, “Not voting is ugly” and urging people to make their decision based on conscience.
Typically cautious about national elections, Francis has been outspoken against abortion and Trump’s anti-immigrant stance in the past. He described both candidates’ policies as “against life.”
Trump has vowed to enforce stricter immigration laws and potentially deport millions, while Harris supports reinstating national abortion protections.
The pope’s comments reflect a broader discussion among U.S. bishops, who have emphasized abortion as a key issue for Catholic voters in recent election cycles.
