Bryan Kohberger, the man charged with the murders of four University of Idaho students, has been transferred to jail in Boise, where his trial will now take place, according to Ada County records released on Sunday.
The Idaho Supreme Court decided to move the trial from Moscow after Kohberger’s defense argued that local media coverage and community sentiment would hinder finding an impartial jury.
Kohberger faces four murder charges related to the deaths of Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen, and Kaylee Goncalves, who were killed in the early hours of November 13, 2022.
Last year, Kohberger did not enter a plea, leading the judge to enter a not-guilty plea on his behalf.
Boise, roughly 300 miles from Moscow, will now host the trial.
Prosecutors had argued that a large enough jury pool could be found in Moscow, but the court decided to move the trial, which could inconvenience the victims’ families, legal teams, and witnesses.
Evidence against Kohberger includes DNA found at the crime scene, surveillance footage, and cellphone data showing his presence in the area multiple times before the murders. His attorneys claim he was merely driving that night for recreational purposes.
Prosecutors have announced their intention to seek the death penalty if Kohberger is convicted.
The trial is scheduled to begin in June 2025.
