Efua Ghartey, a well-known lawyer and co-founder of Ghartey & Ghartey, has made history as the first female president of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), marking a significant moment for gender equality in the legal profession.
She was elected on September 11, after securing 1,278 votes, surpassing her competitor Agbesi Dzakpasu, who received 1,060 votes.
A practicing lawyer since 1992, Ghartey has held key roles across industries such as media, aviation, and education, excelling in company and investment law. She has served as a member of the National Council for 16 years and was the GBA’s Greater Accra Branch president for six years.
Her victory followed two previous attempts to win the GBA presidency.
Ghartey is also recognized globally for her work in women’s rights and her leadership within the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA).
Her election comes at a pivotal time as Ghana implements the Affirmative Action Gender Equity Bill, designed to enhance women’s roles in various sectors.
President Nana Akufo-Addo praised her win as a major step toward greater inclusivity in Ghana.
