Government officials announced in a press conference that starting in 2026, those who voluntarily leave Sweden will be eligible for financial compensation.
Swedish Migration Minister Johan Forssell stated that the country is undergoing a significant shift in its immigration policies.
Currently, the government offers over $3,500 to immigrant families willing to leave, according to reports.
Ludvig Aspling, a member of the conservative Sweden Democrats, suggested that more people would apply for the grant if both the amount and public awareness increased. The program, in place since 1984, was highlighted by the news outlet.
Swedish migration guidelines state that the country is intensifying efforts to reduce irregular border crossings and is targeting immigration fraud and what is referred to as the “shadow society,” a term used to describe illegal immigrants.
In a February 2023, the government emphasized the need for those without legal residency to leave the country, aiming to resolve issues related to unauthorized residents.
The government has also enlisted national police to track illegal immigrants as part of its strategy to combat the “shadow society” and enforce expulsion orders.
