The Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn is notorious for its alleged inhumane conditions, extreme violence, and abysmal medical care. It’s often described as “hell on earth” and an “ongoing tragedy.”
Since its opening in the 1990s, this facility, which is the only federal jail in New York City, has faced numerous issues. In recent years, its harsh conditions have been so severe that some judges have refused to send inmates there. The jail has housed several high-profile detainees, including R. Kelly, Fetty Wap, Donald Trump’s former attorney Michael Cohen, Ghislaine Maxwell, and Sam Bankman-Fried.
Despite its history with famous inmates, the conditions at the MDC Brooklyn starkly contrast with the opulent lifestyle Combs has enjoyed over the past thirty years.
According to the Brooklyn Eagle, MDC Brooklyn has been criticized by several federal judges for its harsh environment, which includes “medical mistreatment, violence, and poor conditions.” Reports have highlighted “barbaric” incidents, such as a 37-second stabbing and two murders.
The facility, which primarily holds defendants awaiting trial, saw two fatal stabbings over the summer and an attack in April where MS-13 gang members stabbed an inmate 44 times, causing severe injuries including a fractured eye socket.
Currently, the facility houses 42 inmates who are serving their full sentences, as the Bureau of Prisons has recently ceased accepting new inmates serving full sentences.
For now, Combs will remain at MDC Brooklyn.
Prior to his first court appearance, he offered $50 million in collateral from his and his mother’s Miami homes. He also agreed to wear a GPS monitor and limit his travel to Florida, New York, and New Jersey, and offered his and his family’s passports.
