A 28-year-old Nigerian woman, Favour Ugwe, has received an eight-year hard labor sentence in Ghana for human trafficking.
On September 19, she was found guilty of trafficking a 19-year-old woman from Chad for exploitation in the country. The court also mandated that she pay GH¢5,000 in compensation to the victim, according to Starrfm.
Ugwe admitted to recruiting the victim from Abuja, Nigeria, with the help of another Nigerian man, and arranging her transport to Ghana.
Judge Mrs. Akosua Anokyewaa Adjepong noted Ugwe’s lack of remorse during the trial and the serious issue of human trafficking in the nation while determining the sentence.
The court considered her as a first-time offender, her age, and the time she had spent in custody. In an online video, Ugwe was seen crying as security personnel escorted her from the courthouse.
