The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced it will investigate allegations of discrepancies in the result sheets from the Edo State Governorship Election held on September 21, 2024.
This comes after reports of incorrect data being entered, marking the second complaint received among the 4,519 polling units involved.
In a statement posted on X, the commission reaffirmed its dedication to transparency and accountability, stating, “We will immediately investigate the matter and address any proven infractions.”
On Saturday, INEC had uploaded over 90% of the polling unit result sheets to its Result Viewing Portal (IReV), with 4,259 results accessible for public viewing.
This proactive approach follows the election in which citizens of Edo State voted to select a new governor to replace the incumbent, Godwin Obaseki, whose term concludes on November 12, 2024.
Edo State is among eight states holding off-season governorship elections due to ongoing legal disputes, alongside Anambra, Bayelsa, Ekiti, Imo, Kogi, Osun, and Ondo.
INEC reported that there are 2,629,025 registered voters in Edo, with 2,249,780 (85.57%) having collected their Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs).
Voters will choose the next governor from a list of 17 candidates, but analysts suggest the main contest is between three frontrunners: Asue Ighodalo from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Olumide Akpata from the Labour Party (LP).
The commission also addressed the allegations regarding incorrect figures entered into polling unit result sheets in the election.
