Starting this month, Americans can request free COVID-19 test kits that will be delivered to their homes. Households can order up to four nasal swab tests through COVIDTests.gov once the federal program restarts, although the exact date for ordering has not yet been announced by the U.S. Health and Human Services agency overseeing the initiative.
A spokesperson mentioned that the tests will identify current virus strains and are available to order before the holiday season when families and friends come together to celebrate.
Last month, U.S. regulators approved an updated COVID-19 vaccine aimed at tackling recent virus strains and potentially upcoming winter strains as well.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended this fall’s vaccine for everyone aged six months and older.
Although most Americans have some level of immunity from previous infections or vaccinations, that protection decreases over time.
The vaccines from last fall targeted a different strain of the coronavirus, which is no longer in circulation.
