Ernest Morales III has officially stepped down from his position as chief of the Metro Transit Police Department, as confirmed by a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Council on Monday.
His departure follows more than a month of administrative leave, during which the council did not provide specific details about the situation.
Morales began his role with the Metro Transit Police Department in February 2023, having previously spent most of his career with the New York City Police Department, where he held various roles in crisis management, investigations, and administration.
He also worked for the Mount Vernon Police Department, overseeing several divisions including patrol services, criminal investigations, and code enforcement.
During Morales’ time at Metro Transit, crime has been a significant concern, with incidents on the light rail increasing by 25% from 2022 to 2023.
Issues such as open drug use and other crimes have contributed to a sense of insecurity among riders.
The Metropolitan Council has not disclosed the reasons for Morales’ termination.
Josepth Dotseth will step in as the interim police chief.
