The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has requested a comprehensive investigation into allegations of bribery within the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) following claims made by social media influencer Idris Okuneye, known as Bobrisky.
Earlier reports indicated that Bobrisky claimed that after receiving a six-month prison sentence, his “godfather” arranged for him to serve his time in a private apartment, colluding with the Controller General of the NCS. He alleged that a sum of 10 million naira was demanded for this arrangement.
Bobrisky asserted that immediately after his sentencing, his godfather assured him he would not have to serve his term in a traditional prison setting. Instead, an apartment near the prison was secured for him to stay in until his sentence was completed, with claims that the Controller General and other officials were bribed to facilitate this plan.
In response to these allegations, the Minister issued a strong warning, stating that any form of indiscipline or corruption within the paramilitary services under his jurisdiction would face serious repercussions. He announced that a special investigative team, led by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, would thoroughly examine the case.
The Minister reaffirmed the Ministry of Interior’s core values of integrity, transparency, and accountability, stating that anyone found guilty of these allegations would be subjected to legal consequences. He stressed that the investigation would be transparent, impartial, and exhaustive, with the goal of restoring public confidence in the Nigerian Correctional Service.
